Starting an Exercise Routine
Starting an exercise routine can be a daunting task. 30 minutes per day of exercise is recommended for good, overall health. Sometimes, finding 30 minutes of uninterrupted time can be a challenge and then exercising... it makes a lot of people pause.
The key to this 30 minute guideline is that it can be broken down. 30 minutes can become 15 minutes twice a day or 10 minutes 3 times a day. Most of us can find 10 minutes of down time.
Barring any medical problems (check with your doctor!), here are some ways to sneak exercise in...
Parking for an appointment
- Park further from the door - get a little extra walk in
- Swing your arms more when you walk
While waiting in line at the grocery store...
- Balance on one foot
- Lift up onto your toes
- Lift back onto your heels (toes up!)
- Mini knee bends
Talking on the phone
- Got a cordless phone? Walk around your home
- Mini knee bends
- Grab a couple of cans of soup, bend your elbows for some bicep work.
Children
- Play a game of tag and/or hide and seek
- Lay on the floor and lift your children up
- Play jump rope
A few minutes, a little creativity and you will be on your way to a healthier, happier you!
