Oh, the weather outside is frightful...

Winter has finally reached northeast Ohio bringing snow, snow and more snow! Many of us will be bundling up and trudging out to shovel walkways and driveways. Between the sudden exposure to cold air and hard work, shoveling snow is an instant workout for your heart. If you have a heart condition, smoke or are physically inactive, please consider getting help with the snow.

For the intrepid snow shovelers out there, here are a few tips:

1. Warm-up by stretching back, legs and arms gently.

2.  Push rather than lift snow

3.  Use a shovel with a longer handle to avoid excessive bending.

4.  Shovel for only 5-10 minutes at a time and then take a break

5. Drink water before and after shoveling -- it can be quite a workout!

Physical therapists are trained in safe lifting and moving techniques. Please do not hesitate to contact one of our offices if you have questions or concerns about proper lifting and/or shoveling techniques.
